An Uneven Collection

John Updike at his best is hard to beat. The brilliance-gem-like brilliance--- of his observatory powers dazzle me. His choice of words, the power of his phrasing all can leave me amazed. How could anyone write like that ? And at such a young age too. Certain stories in this collection from the 1960s took my breath away. "A Madman", about an encounter with an extremely eccentric Englishman on a first trip to Oxford not only captures the feel of Americans out of their culture, of English life, and the old ways of that university town, but also of all such encounters with persuasive crazies anywhere in the world. Unbelievably good. I loved the 1950s, small town feel of such stories as "The Indian" and "In Football Season", which will serve forever as memoirs of the atmosphere of even-now bygone times. The former, about Ipswich, Mass., close to home for me, resonates even more. "The Bulgarian Poetess" too struck a chord with me---the story of a love never taken up, a future glimpsed only through a door never entered. What a writer ! Yet I can't say that I liked all these stories unequivocally. Some of them seemed too much "insider" stuff, fit only for people who shared the same slice of classical knowledge that the writer carries. Others harped a little too dismally on the disappointments and futility of marriage, or the dubious pleasures of adultery---always, in Updike's view---the view of a reluctant puritan---a losing proposition which cannot really bring satisfaction to any party. Couples thrashing around in the sea of inevitability quickly become old hat; if they get nothing but pain out of it, why do they do it so often ? That may be his question too, but I don't think he answers sufficiently. Some of the stories seem to be rather self-indulgent, as if the author said, "You know, I can write a story about anything. Just name the most obscure topic or theme you can think of and I'll write you a story on it. Now watch this !" Cool, but will it have much meaning to others ? These are some of my criticisms. On the whole, though, this collection can provide both pleasure and interest. It is nearly forty years old, but only few collections written since then can equal it.

The Music School-- An Unlikely Surprise

Just before boarding a plane to England a friend
of mine handed me a small hardcover edition of
the John Updike book "The Music School". I knew
nothing about Updike or his style but proceeded
to open the book on the long flight. As I read
I became more and more engrossed in the simple
short stories that often brought a smile to my
face. There were a few that I didn't particularly
enjoy, but others such as the "Bulgarian Poetess", which I believe won the O. Henry Short Story award, was fabulous. Another that I enjoyed was
the story "Twin Beds In Rome", a story about a
failing marriage, which also has somewhat of a sequel in the book called "Giving Blood".
After reading all these stories, I began a new
love for an author that has been acclaimed for his unique style of writing. This is a must for any
person who enjoys short stories and would like to get to know John Updike a little bit better.

No great lover of short stories but in Updike who is now complete, dead, so no more words, you will find sentences that take you somewhere, a moment truely and newly described, in a city or small American town, and leave you euphoric with satisfaction at what art can do.

About the Author
Donald C. Mosley was Professor Emeritus of Management at the University of South Alabama and also the founder and chairman of the Synergistic Consulting Group. Earlier in his career, Dr. Mosley served as Chair of the Management Department at Mississippi State University and as a visiting professor at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand (where he helped to develop the first M.B.A. degree program in New Zealand). In 1973 he became Dean of the College of Business at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, where he helped the College become accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business. In 1983, he returned to teaching, research, and consulting; and in 1999 he received the University of South Alabama Alumni Association's Outstanding Professor award and was mentioned in Who's Who Among America's Teachers.

Donald C. Mosley, Jr. is an Assistant Professor of Management at the University of South Alabama where he teaches Management Theory and Practice, Organizational Behavior, and Management Seminar. He received his Ph.D. in Business Administration from Mississippi State University. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Millsaps College and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of South Alabama. He has conducted research in the areas of recruiting, selection, conflict management, teamwork, leadership, and partnering. As a consultant, he has been instrumental in working with organizations in the public and private sectors to implement organizational development techniques and supervisory training programs. Dr. Mosley is a member of the Academy of Management Association and the Southern Management Association.

Paul Pietri is Professor of Management at the University of South Alabama; in 1993, the Alumni Association selected him for their Outstanding Professor award. Dr. Pietri has an extensive background as a trainer/consultant to private and public sector organizations, both in North America and abroad. He has designed, administered, and conducted training at the supervisory level for organizations in thirty-five states and Canada. These include International Paper Company, Shell, Dupont, the U.S. Departments of Agriculture, Labor, and Defense, and others. He also helped design curriculum for the "Supervisory Communication" segment of Mississippi Public Television's series "Effective Communication". His writings have reflected his training and design experiences, and appeared in such journals as Training, Organizational Development Journal, Industrial Management, and others.

About the Author
Richard L. Thompson was born in Binghampton, New York, in 1947. In 1974 he received his Ph. D. in mathematics from Cornell University, where he specialized in probability theory and statistical mechanics.

Dr. Thompson has done scientific research in quantum physics, mathematical biology, and remote sensing. He has extensively investigated ancient Indian astronomy, cosmology, and spirituality, and he has developed multimedia expositions on these topics. He is the author of six books on topics ranging from consciousness to archeology and ancient astronomy.

A down to earth context for out of this world ideas.

One of the difficulties in the 'UFOlogy' field is that there are plenty of offbeat accounts, and in some cases evidence but mostly in pieces, or without context, or with potential other explanations. (There is more than most people are aware of, though.)

Authors such as Dr. Jacques Vallee have given interesting historical overviews of UFO lore. Of course, all these accounts are 'accounts' and 'Lore', they are not scientific evidence, but since these experiences don't seem to happen on command inside a science lab, this may account for that problem. The fact that the surgeon general has not yet made a ruling about the existence or effect of UFOs or 'experiences' potentially related, will not change whether they or the experiences exist.

ALIEN IDENTITIES is a book title I cringe to give to people and consider an embarrassment to the content. Consider it was written when such a title (not to mention Streiber as an intro) were apparently considered a hot sell and hence the publisher promo. The CONTENT of the book has a calm, fair, respectability in its own fashion that belies the assumption and hype of the title.

This book is a great introduction for people new to the subject. The first half is a recount of documented Vedic history, which is part and parcel of their religion. The second half is a recount of documented recent history--accounts in the UFOlogy field. Which, like religious history, are equally tenuous and unprovable.

However, when you read the detail from the historical accounts, and then you read the detail of claims from the last half century, the parallel is more than just striking. It's pretty much obvious to anybody with half a brain and no major personal bias that the modern day accounts are clearly talking about some of the same kind of things as the ancient accounts.

In the context of how seriously we should take modern accounts, for which we have little hard proof and a lot of confusion, a realization that they are hardly a novel new result of science fiction books is important.

In the context of religion, "the Gods," and many accounts biblical as well as Vedic, it is thought provoking to say the least.

I highly recommend this book. It reads well, it is interesting, it is informative, and it doesn't pretend to be anything it's not. It makes no claims. It is one of the very few UFOlogy related books that I have kept on my shelves for years.

A balanced Account

This is one of the best books dealing with the subject of UFOs I have read. The author has a very sober and balanced account of the subject. The first part of the book recounts many of the most high profile cases of UFO sightings, abduction et. al. The author is neither credulous nor incredulous but fair throughout. He fields it all with many references and contexts. The second part of the book brings to bear his knowledge of Vedic lore and juxtaposes it with the modern UFO mythos. It is a work that covers something heretofore not explored by any writer to my knowledge - at least in any depth. Thompson has a fine analytical mind in all he writes. I highly recomend this book to anyone interested in this subject. This is not sensational (as so many books on the subject are). It is instead scholarly throughout. Much food for thought here. A must-read book for those studying Fethullah Gulen

Erkan Kurt’s compilation of Fethullah Gulen’s lead articles came to me very auspicious effort in many ways. Introducing a self-exiled, moderate, and progressive preacher to the world is something we all need today, at a time when misconceptions about Islam are abound. It is really intriguing that a person like Fethullah Gulen has not been gained a global recognition enough by the intellectual and spiritual communities and traditions. Perhaps more interesting than this is the fact that still many people don’t have any idea what the “Hizmet” Movement or Gulen Movement, “a loose network of civic and humanitarian projects that include schools, tutoring centers, universities, hospital aid and relief organizations, interfaith and intercultural dialog organizations, publishing houses, and media outlets” (p.vii) is all about.

In his introduction, the editor Dr. Erkan Kurt (also the translator) describes Fethullah Gulen’s lifestyle as “very modest and yet socially active” (p.viii) which summarizes Gulen’s entire life journey; extremely humble, but also very interactive. Kurt also argues that Gulen is a moralist like Kant and a “wise teacher” like Ghazali or Rumi (p.ix). There are 40 essays in this reader collected in six chapters. Each chapter has its own theme.

Entitled Humanity & Civilization, the first chapter starts with humanity and takes it to concepts like “woman”, “ideal society”, “civilization”, and “nature”. But Gulen also touches some other concepts elegantly. Especially his description of love is simply brilliant. “Love does not fight for ascendancy, it is already enthroned” (p.3) is an apt description about love. “A person armed with love needs no other weapon” (p.5) is a strong argument against so-called fundamentalist Muslims.

Gulen, on the other hand, does not ignore the animal side of the human beings, his emphasis on our Hobbesian side (p.9) as well as the competition between our animal and angelic side is noteworthy (p.10). When talking about the women, he argues that “woman and man share the same divine creation and mission in the world; they are like two faces of a single reality” (p.25). In “The Ideal Society”, we see that it start with the ideal human, the prerequisite for such a society (p.31).

Gulen also makes comparisons between certain concepts. For instance, he compares “civilization” with “modernization”, contending that the latter “can change the appearance of life, but it does not necessarily civilize people” (p.35). Sometimes, his unique approach to a specific concept like nature is worth contemplating: “Nature was like a magnificent vessel sailing toward the country of love, or a chandelier with a thousand lights illuminating the realms beyond” (p.39). The very first chapter can be summarized as the place of humanity in God’s sight as well as the unique approach by Gulen to various concepts.

Second chapter, named Faith and Wisdom, is about the relationship between the believer and the God. Gulen again emphasizes love, seeing as the foundation of the believer’s actions. He mentions different types of love including the ones felt by the unbelievers towards people. Gulen distinguished all these types and thinks that love of God is the true type of love.

Chapter Three is called Morals and Sprituality. Gulen explains “heart”, “love” (again), “mercy”, “forgiveness”, “tolerance”, and “happiness”. Will take pages to expound on them, but for example, about heart we read this: “Today, we yearn for the stories of the heart, for in them we feel the reviving breaths of Jesus” (p. 82). In mercy, he associates it with nature: “Different voices and tunes merge in rhythms so perfect that only an all-encompassing mercy could be directing this mysterious music” (p.88).

The fourth chapter is Education. The editor selected the articles starting with the youth and then the philosophy of education Gulen adopts. As the source of inspiration of a social movement who focuses on education, Fethullah Gulen expresses his unique views on it. About a teacher, for example, he writes this: “One who grasps the significance of phenomena and builds associations between life and conscience. The teacher hears the truth in everything and can express it n any language. School is like a laboratory for future generations, and the teacher is its physician. The teacher is the one who can heal our social ailments and remove the dark clouds from our horizon” (p.119). Gulen’s main concern is to “cultivate virtue in youth” (p.123). He wants the pupils to have two wings, one filled with positive science and the other with virtue. That is why, Gulen thinks that humanity is at a crossroads to “elevate our children to the truth of their humanity or abandon them to alienation” (p.130).

People of Service is the name of Chapter Five. As the name suggests it is about the general characteristics of the people in the Movement. Gulen describes these people with many phrases, but “the people we are longing for” (p.133), “the architects of our future” (p.135), and “devout architects of our souls” (p.143) are equally striking. Gulen adds more words when describing these people. “In them, there is no quarrel between spirit matter” (p.134) says Gulen, bringing so-called faith/science clash to our attention. On an interesting note, in the article dated March 1991, Gulen states that “the new person… will utilize all possible means for reaching the minds and the heart of people, from publication to mass media” (p.140). It is no surprise that Gulen Movement or Service Movement is very active in mass and social media.

But perhaps the most conspicuous aspect of those people is the self-sacrifice. “So that Others may Live”, as the title of the book, summarizes Gulen’s purpose of life in this world. In many places of the book, he reiterates the same philosophy through different combination of sentences. “He suffers so that others may not suffer. his tears flow so that others may not weep. If he does not serve others, he considers himself worthless” (p.64), “True virtue lies in living for the sake of others” (p.95), “… he readily sacrifices his own felicity for the happiness of others” (p. 105), “… devout ones, who are not concerned with their own felicity and who understand that their own prosperity is intimately tied to the prosperity of others” (p.143), “they neglect themselves in order to better serve others” (p.145)

The final chapter is entitled Islam. Most of the chapter is dedicated to various characteristics of Islam with the very last article, the longest one in the book, is exclusively about Prophet Muhammad. When talking about Islam’s message to humanity, Gulen is concise: “(Islam) is rooted in divine revelation, remains within the framework of human reason, respects human feelings, and is enriched by inspiration (p.173). Gulen explanation to jihad is also a must-read.

In general, this book is a very useful compendium of articles to know better the life philosophy of Fethullah Gulen and the movement he inspired as well as the Islamic concepts which form its foundation. The editor, Dr. Kurt, does an excellent job with the selection and translation.

Unique scholar

Excellent book to examine Mr Fethullah Gulen's thoughts and ideas. He is a prominent Islamic scholar and social activist. No doubt, there are a lot of brilliant scholar in Islamic world.
