About the Author
Michael M. Cox is Assistant Chair, Department of Biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He received his B.A. in Biology from the University of Delaware and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Brandeis University. Cox's current research activity involves studies of the mechanism of action of proteins involved in genetic recombination. This work is focused on the bacterial RecA protein, the bacterial RecF, RecO, RecR, RecG, RuvA, and RuvB proteins, the yeast Rad 51 protein, and more broadly on the mechanism of the recombinational DNA repair of stalled replication forks. Jennifer A. Doudna grew up on the Big Island of Hawaii, where she became interested in chemistry and biochemistry during her high school years. She is currently Professor of Molecular and Cell Biology and Professor of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley and an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. She received her B.A. in biochemistry from Pomona College and her Ph.D. from Harvard University, working in the laboratory of Jack Szostak, with whom she also did postdoctoral research. Michael O'Donnell received his Ph.D. at the University of Michigan, where he worked under Charles Williams Jr. on electron transfer in the flavoprotein thioredoxin reductase. He performed postdoctoral work on E. coli replication with Arthur Kornberg and then on herpes simplex virus replication with I. Robert Lehman, both in the biochemistry department at Stanford University. O'Donnell then became a member of the faculty of Weill Cornell Medical College in 1986 and an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in 1992 before moving to The Rockefeller University in 1996. O'Donnell is a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

Title says a lot

Before I started to read the book I spent a few minutes going through what others had written in their reviews. Some of the named people were famous in their own right so I knew at once I was in for a treat. The late Barbara Cartland and William Roach, MBE had many good things to record, and they were correct .
But early on I decided this was not only a remarkable book it was also exceptional across the board. Strictly a historical book functioning as an autobiographical one, well sprinkled with diary quotes by a young man who went on to serve in three different armies. The author Dr Douglas Baker was that young man, born in England, and it was he who joined the Natal Mounted Rifles against the Nazi in the second World War.
I rubbed my hands together because I loved the excitement and drama I'd seen in the cult film Zulu. Now followed plenty of action and we see soldiers bogged down by heat, illness, the small 2 pounders and all this happened whilst fighting the Nazi.
Early on the author introduces the reader to his mates, soldiers who he got to know well. Some died in action. Always the words are there narrating the events of the day, the success and the failures, the heat, the routines, the punishments and the reader gets to know what makes soldiers tick. I imagine it must have been heart warming for many people to see the names of their family members kept alive in the book and their truth worth being acknowledged and never forgotten.
As a writer myself, I appreciate how difficult it is to gather words together to match dates and facts , tackle grammar and to fight a war at the same time. The book brings so many aspects together and it is here Dr Douglas Baker is brilliant. I can't help but thank him for presenting to the reader such a wonderful book. Those parties who love history will find their interest stimulated by reading exploits from the past, by a keen eyed soldier who was THERE. Every piece of action is narrated in a light style and is backed up by many maps, drawings and black and white photographs. This is all compelling reading, pure nostalgia to many. But the burning question must remain of how the author managed to complete such a book. The answer simply lies with Dr Douglas Barker and his affinity to narrate well. But the author lets us know of his injuries and how he coped with them and what sparked off his interest in wounded men and other aspects of the war. We the reader learn and marvel at how after being badly injured and in hospital he managed to escape and continue the fight against the Germans while still wrapped up in bandages.
The book is full of drama often with a surreal aspect about events. There is the shark attack, the aircraft shot down by the author and bars in Cairo which all add colour to the book.
What is also remarkable about this book is that it opened a new chapter to the author's life. He was acutely aware what effects shrapnel had on soldiers and how they reacted under the constant pressure of war. It was enough for him to take up medicine and in it the making of a different kind of story because of the numerous books he subsequently wrote and the targets he achieved.
Returning to 'War,Wine & Valour' this is one that makes reviewing a completely new and enjoyable experience.

5 Years of War

A remarkable book. Baker has a prodigious memory, backed up by trenchant research, of events more than sixty years earlier. I find I get a much more vivid impression of war from books like this than from war films. Baker brings alive the dust, the dirt, the heat, the hard slog, the intermittent lack of food and water, the comradeship, the importance of good morale and outstanding bravery, and a helluva lot of good times on leave in Cairo, Naples etc.

Baker also draws a whole series of fantastic pencil sketches (I am being metaphorical) of his mates, although that is a Tommy word, he would call them chaps.

There is also a lot of interest in the question of shellshock. From Baker's description it is difficult to see how anyone could surivive the constant barrage of battle, but some did and the descriptions of what made it possible are one of the fascinating themes of this book.

Great reading but hard on the eyes

I had an earlier edition of this book and liked it so much I ordered a new one for a relative. Unfortunately, the publisher has shrunk the size and the print is far too small. If you can read it, it's great. But if you can't stand the strain of tiny print, I'm afraid you'll have a hard time with this edition.

Grade 6–9—Honey and Agnes are 14-year-old best friends growing up in the Mount Blessing religious commune near Fairfield, CT, but are polar opposites in their adherence to the "Four Big Rules" that govern daily life. Honey, abandoned at the commune as a newborn, is a perpetual rebel, having most recently been sent to the Regulation Room for kissing a boy. There, the group's founder/leader, the charismatic Emmanuel, metes out punishments. Agnes is a self-described "saint wannabe." She starves herself, sleeps on stones, and wears a cord tightly belted under her robe as reminders of the suffering endured by the saints. The girls share a love for Nana Pete, Agnes's father's mother, and live for her annual summer visits. When Nana discovers the physical and emotional abuse imposed on the children, she resolves to spirit them away. Honey is a willing runaway, but Agnes is reluctant. The kids' new reality includes "firsts" such as visits to McDonald's and Wal-Mart. Their route ends in Georgia, at the home of Agnes's estranged aunt. In the realistic and emotionally charged climax, family ties are revealed and, thanks to Honey's forethought and Agnes's new understanding that the truth can set you free, the cult is soon busted, police lights flashing. When Agnes’ little brother, Benny, has a serious accident, which Emmanuel tries to heal with a miracle, Nana Pete whisks the three children away. The story, both past and present, unfolds in alternating chapters told by Agnes and Honey. Galante, who grew up in a religious commune, captures Agnes’ loyalty and unease, and Honey’s ability to see beyond her surroundings is adequately explained (she’s living with someone who has snuck a tiny TV into the compound), though the question of her origins seems contrived. Mount Blessing is a secluded commune near Fairfield, Connecticut, and home to about 260 people. Emmanuel, the founder of the commune, leads them in all areas of life. Most of the inhabitants hold him in the highest regard, only one tiny step below Jesus. They trust him to lead them in spiritual lives, and he does so in a strict, perfectionist way --- no television or radios, chanting prayers many hours a day, and restriction to the Mount Blessing grounds, except for the ones who have jobs to earn money for the commune. Emmanuel also handles the discipline.

Fourteen-year-olds Honey and Agnes have lived their entire lives at Mount Blessing. Every child there leaves his or her parents at six months of age and moves to the nursery until the age of seven or so. Then he or she returns to live with mom and dad. Except for Honey. Her father is a complete question mark, and her mother left the commune when Honey was just three weeks old. The only item her mom left behind was a tiny ceramic cat, which Honey carries with her all the time.

Honey and Agnes have been best friends since the cradle. At least up until recently. When Agnes turns 12, Emmanuel presents her with a special book, THE SAINTS' WAY. After that, Agnes strives desperately for perfection and sainthood. She even performs self-mutilation in penance for her mistakes, like starvation (she calls fasting), sleeping on rocks, and tying a string around her waist to cut into her skin. Agnes feels that Mount Blessing is a sacred place and a special home.

Honey, on the other hand, desperately dreams of freedom from Mount Blessing's rigid rules. She sneaks glimpses of the outside world from the tiny black and white TV that her housemate, Winky, a physically and mentally challenged gardener, hides under his bed to secretly watch baseball games. The only happiness Honey finds is helping Winky in the butterfly gardens, her friendship with Agnes before she began straining for sainthood, and the yearly visit of Nana Pete.

Nana Pete is grandmother to Agnes and her little brother Benny, but has always included Honey in everything. She comes for yearly visits, and the three kids enjoy their time with her. However, this year Nana Pete finally learns about Emmanuel's harsh discipline, and she refuses to allow the child abuse to continue. A life-threatening accident offers the opportunity to yank Agnes, Benny and Honey away from the commune. While Honey loves exploring the outside world's freedom, Agnes pleads to return to Mount Blessing. In the frantic chaos that follows their escape, the group of scarred and hurting spirits discovers a few deeply buried secrets.

Told in alternating points of view, switching chapters for Agnes and Honey, readers get to see the different effects of this particular commune up close and personal. Galante is a very talented writer, and fans will eagerly look forward to her next book.

Amazing.

I am a 65 year old book store owner/high school English teacher, and this is one of my favorite books ever. It is a book for adolescent girls, but some how it was perfect for me. I have always wondered about the life lead inside a cult. In the novel one sees the fanatically religious cult breaking apart, but at the same time, the book is not against religion. The organization of the novel moves from the view point of one girl to the other, which moves the story quickly forward. I loved the time I spent reading. The book is a treasure.

a great and timely read!

This is a very timely book, coming out just as 437 children have been taken from a religious commune in Texas, their parents and leaders suspected of abuse. Agnes and Honey, two very different girls who are best friends, live on a very strict commune. Agnes is trying to become a saint, while Honey is trying to escape. Agnes has a family high in the commune's power structure, while Honey, an orphan, lives in a shack with the commune's handyman. Then Agnes's grandmother, while visiting, finds out what happens to the commune's kids when they are disciplined, and Agnes's little brother is badly hurt. The grandmother kidnaps both girls and the boy. It is then that all three kids get a chance to look at their commune and its adults from a distance. The characters are believably real: Agnes is annoying when she tries to be perfect, but she loves her brother and her friend. Honey is a pain because she is always contrary, but she wants to help her friend and the boy. And the book gives a great view of adults as human beings, with both good and bad sides. Seeing the kids react to things like fast food and shopping is fun, and the end kept me on the edge of my seat!

Overall I liked this book for what it was – a how-to for those new to the EdTech Leadership roles in our districts. I did take exception to the slight he paid district level Integration Specialists – we certainly can play a larger part in the Technology Department than the share of this book we received.

This book helped provide me with a realistic view of the current department I work for – where we are, where we could be.

An excellent read for anyone in K-12 IT departments.

An excellent read from an edtech leader with 20 years experience in the field. If you are in charge of, or part of, a IT team at the K-12 level, I absolutely recommend giving this book a read. Daugherty covers an enormous range of practical tips and strategies for modernizing your team and creating a forward-thinking organization. It's a quick read, but it packs a punch, and every page is full of ideas and examples based on Daugherty's experience in the field.
