Great Book, But Get the ReWrite It's Better

This book deserves a 5 rating but just an FYI don't buy it. Get the Force: Dynamic Life Drawing for Animators. It's basically this book word for word except its longer, has more pics and covers way more than the first book.

Brings Art to Life and Life to Art

The focus here is primarily on the use of assymetry through straight and curved lines to show the direction of force in the body. This is covered in other books, but not this extent. Other methods treat this material as secondary to contour and gesture, here it is the focus of a drawing. The book is filled with excellent ,forceful examples of using rhythm, shape, and line to bring out the life in a subject.

There is one weakness here. The author does cover many things beginners need to know, but goes over them very quickly. While a beginner could learn from this book, perhaps a little experience with the basics would be helpful before coming to this book.

The author is an animator and besides appealing to other animators, his clean style would appeal to those interested in sketching or reportage, a subject which the author devotes a whole chapter to.

nebulous, disappointing book

I have attempted several times over the years to use this book in order to get a little more than a basic understanding of distributed amplifiers, with an eye to possibly using them in my work. I have to admit that I was more confused after I read from the book than before I started. The equations are there and appear to be correct, but the magic ingredient that makes the material intelligible to others is missing. The author references other papers/books, but the way in which the material is presented is fragmented and at times seems to be lacking the most elementary logic. The material is simply very hard to follow, what is "obvious" to the author is not at all obvious to the reader, and the presentation of even the most fundamental of concepts is garbled beyond belief. A very bad book, in my opinion.

AN EARLY BOOK REPUDIATING "ROMISH" DOCTRINES

Ralph Woodrow is the author of many other books and publications such as Great Prophecies of The Bible, "Three Days And Three Nights" Reconsidered, etc. The prospective reader of this book should be aware that Woodward has since repudiated this book (written in 1966 when he was only 27) in The Babylon Connection?, and has also reconsidered his former rejection of the Christmas celebration in Christmas Reconsidered, and his former rejection of Easter in Easter: Is It Pagan?.

He wrote in the first chapter, "We believe the pages which follow prove it was this MIXTURE that produced that system which is known today as the Roman Catholic church. We do no doubt that there are many fine, sincere, and devout Catholics. It is not our intention to ... ridicule anyone whose beliefs we may disagree with. Instead, we would hope this book will inspire all people... to forsake Babylonish doctrines and seek a return to the faith that was once delivered unto the saints." (Pg. 6)

He says, "The early Christians did not consider the cross on which Jesus died a virtuous symbol, but rather as 'the accursed tree,' a device of death and 'shame' (Heb 12:2)... They never spoke of the cross as a piece of wood one might hang from a little chain around his neck or carry in his hand as a protector or charm." (Pg. 40) He adds, "Jesus died on ONE cross---what shape was it?... the Greek word from which 'cross' is translated... simply means an upright stake or post. If the instrument on which Jesus died was no more than this, it was not a 'cross' (as such) at all! This would clearly show the folly of many types of crosses being 'Christianized.'" (Pg. 45)

He notes, "At the Easter season it is not uncommon for Christians to attend sunrise services. It is assumed that such honor Christ because he rose from the dead on Easter Sunday morning just as the sun was coming up. But the resurrection did not occur at sunrise. When Mary Magdalene came to the tomb it was yet DARK---and the tomb was already empty! On the other hand, there was a type of sunrise service that was a part of ancient sun worship... such practices, being without Scriptural example, do indicate that mixtures have been made." (Pg. 137-138)

Of the time of the Inquisition, he observes, "Some of the popes that today are acclaimed as 'great' lived and thrived during those days. Why didn't they open the dungeon doors and quench the murderous fires that blackened the skies of Europe for centuries? ... the Inquisition was ordered by papal decree and confirmed by pope after pope! Can any believe that such actions were representative of Him who said to turn the cheek, to forgive our enemies, and to do good to them that despitefully use us?" (Pg. 101)

He argues, "It is generally acknowledged that December 25th was not the actual date on which Jesus was born and that many of today's Christian customs stem from pre-Christian origins. Does this mean, then, that Christians must refuse to share meals with family and friends during the season? Should one's mission in life be an anti-Christmas crusade? Right or wrong, Christmas is a firmly established day in our calendar and, all things considered, it is evident that there are many causes more fruitful than counterproductive attempts to do away with it... If Christians were to take such actions as ... pulling their children out of school during the Christmas season---lest they take part in programs or plays---they would unwittingly place themselves on the same side as the atheists! A fanatical opposition to Christmas can cause unnecessary hurt among family and friends... an avoidance of extremes, is in order." (Pg. 145)

Sicilia!

its a good book for anyone whos interested in learning sicilian. i like how it was somewhat standardized (anyone whos familar with sicilian knows that it is not generally written down, and therefore there is no real standard othography). its better for people that have some knowledge of italian or another romance language.

its not intended as a book for non-serious learners....there are no fun pictures of animals and whatnot to keep you entertained, as in other beginning language books.

Admirable book, but putting what you can learn into practice is difficult

As I live with a Sicilian, I decided to learn more about the Sicilian language in addition to Italian. The book is very well structured, starting with a very comprehensive pronunciation guide that also highlights the major differences to Italian - quite important if like me your also learning that language. It then covers all the major grammatical constructs in a clean and consistent way, before closing with a compact vocabulary.

However, putting what you learn from the book into practice may not be so straightforward. Sicilian has ten major dialects, which the book acknowledges, but they differ vastly in vocabulary and pronunciation. For instance the word "emu" (to go) is described as having a very soft "y" sound at the beginning followed by the fairly hard front vowel "a". Pronouncing it this way, rather than with just a very hard front vowel "a" is not how my partner pronounces it. Having run into this kind of problem a number of times, I asked my partner to read the book to see if it was my pronunciation that is at fault.

Her conclusion is that the book inadequately covers the differences between each dialect, something that is probably inevitable considering how poorly codified the language is. So while I recommend this book, I strongly suggest you also try to converse with a native speaker as early as possible. This is becoming more difficult though, as younger Sicilians (those born from the 1970's onwards) tend to know very little of the old language. As the book points out, this is a shame as it's very "earthy" and expressive.

Excellent for learning or reference

This is a must-have book for anyone interested in Sicilian as a language on its own, or interested in Italian dialects in general, or even anyone interested in Romance linguistics.

It manages to be both a teaching grammar and a reference grammar, and it is useful both for self-study and as a textbook for a class.

If you want to use this book for learning Sicilian on your own, it would help (but isn't necessary) if you are acquainted with standard Italian spelling system (so that letter-groups like "cchiù" won't seem too strange do you), and know a bit of another Romance language, so that the word order doesn't seem to strange to you, especially with verb forms like "portaccilli" ("carry them for him"). But this book is still useable (although more difficult) if you don't have that background, because the author carefully and clearly explains all the aspects of the grammar. As such, this book can almost serve as a model for teaching the more neglected Romance languages.

I should warn you about an inevitable problem you may face: the book uses the standard writing system for Sicilian, warts and all. For example, "in order to" is "pi" (pronounced like English "pea"), and "to go" is "iri", pronounced "yiri" (like English "yearly" without the "l"); but combining them produces a phonetic change that standard spelling sometimes writes as "pi iri" (not noting the change at all), or as "pi gghiri", expressing the geminate /g/ sound with the letter cluster "ggh" that is familiar only to students of standard mainland Italian. A more phonetic notation would always write "pi" with a symbol noting that it causes a phonetic change in the following word, and "iri" as "yiri", and would write the combined form as something like "pi-ggiri". However, if you learned from a book that used such a phonetic notation, you'd have a lot of trouble adjusting to the standard writing system that you'd see everywhere outside of such a book.

So the author works out a compromise: when he introduces a word like "pi" that changes the following word, he notes this by writing it "pi+" for a few pages; and when an unusual pronounciation occurs, the author very often marks it -- for example, noting that "pi iri" can also be written as "pi gghiri", or that "in vucca" (in the mouth) can also be written as "nvucca" or "mmucca", and so on.

Also, Italian stress is usually unmarked, but the author deals with that problem by boldfacing stressed syllables in some cases. But I wish that the author had done this everywhere, instead of just here and there. However, this is only a minor distraction for students. On the whole, the book is a model of clarity!

Great for self-study

The book is organized by organ system, and each chapter is full of well explained illustration. To use the book, not much knowledge of chemistry is needed (just a bit of acid/base chem, freshman year) and elementary cell biology. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants an elementary, easy to follow introduction to anatomy and physiology for self-study.
