Balanced approach to Multiculturalism!

The book is a great contribution to the scholarly knowledge about the evolution of indigenous movements in the region. The authors assess the outcomes and limits of the multiculturalist paradigm and the diverse paths that ethnic movements have taken depending on the political settings they have had to face in their countries of origin. To those of us who still believe that indigenous organizations enhance a fair fight against centuries of political exclusion, the book provides a well balanced examination of the problems posed by autonomy demands in Bolivia, Ecuador and Mexico; but also the potential for a further phase of mobilization and the full recognition of collective rights into Latin American states.

A disappointing read

The Janna Mysteries is a fantastic series with a wonderful premise and interesting characters, however Willows for Weeping seemed to be, for all intents and purposes, the odd book out. Although it was beautifully written with wonderful descriptions of the scenery that made you feel as though you were walking down the road yourself, the plot left something to be desired. While I can understand that the plot line was based on Janna travelling from the Abbey to Winchester and therefore most of the usual characters would not appear, I was dishearten to found out that the only character that I knew was Janna. Since the other 5 books in the series at least had one or two other regular characters appearing, it left the book feeling somewhat disconnected to the series especially when Felicity introduced Rolf as another possible love interest for Janna. After reading the first three books I had believed that Janna had matured especially when it came to her instincts about men in her life, however Janna's relationship with Rolf made me feel like she had actually digressed in her maturity as she showed a somewhat naive trust in him that hadn't been seen since before the death of her mother. You think that she wouldn't be so trusting of strangers after the attempt on her life at the abbey and the death of one of her companions. All in all, Willows for Weeping was not a bad book but it was disappointing result after the previous novel, Lilies for Love.

Book four in a magical six-book series.

I love this series - it's so magical and fun, with a good dose of mystery and a teenage protagonist who has to solve a crime (or two) as she continues her quest to find her father and avenge her mother's death. At the end of book three Janna was surprised to find herself enjoying life in the abbey, where she had found friendship, learning and a sense of purpose as a healer. But her quest remains more important to her than her own happiness, and so, having finally learnt to read and with some new clues to her father's identity, she leaves the security of the abbey and heads out on the road to Winchestre with some pilgrims, determined to track down her remaining parent. They're a rag tag bunch, each having their own intriguing story, beliefs and motives, and Janna isn't sure who she can trust (and she learns some hard lessons when she reads a few people the wrong way). There's plenty of action - early on they stumble across a dead man carrying a message that could change the fortunes of the king, one of the pilgrims is murdered inside the circle of Stonehenge, and as Janna gets closer to the truth of the culprit, danger swirls ever nearer. As in all the Janna books, the heroine is smart, kind and fearless, yet she is also flawed, with a quick temper and a naivety that frequently gets her into trouble, but makes her all the more endearing. All the characters are interesting and multi-dimensional, making you feel deeply for them, and the historical figures and true events combined with the imagined lives of others creates a captivating story. As in previous instalments, the author manages to have all the mysteries solved by the end of each book, while also opening up new questions that leave you desperate to read the next one! I first read this book more than two years ago, and was devastated to learn that number five and six were indefinitely delayed. When it was announced recently that the final two in the series were about to be published, I read the first four books again in preparation, and they were just as enchanting and satisfying the second time around.

first of all you have to read the ones before it in the seires. i loved the book, i was hooked!but ,in my opinion,it needs to stop having one bad thing happen after awhile. it loses the dramatic affect. but apart for that i love it!!!!!

Permission Granted- Take the Bible into Your Own Hands by Jennifer Grace Bird is an engaging book I highly recommend. I've been waiting for years for this type of book to be published. As an avid female reader, I've wanted to read a book that directly addressed complicated Biblical issues in an academic manner. In Bird's book, you won't find any humorous stories about everyday life. Instead, prepare yourself for a thought provoking study of difficult stories, people, and specific scripture found in both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. The Garden of Eden, the role of women in the church and family, rape, and genocide are a few examples of the topics covered in this book.

Throughout the book, Bird encourages the reader to explore difficult issues through a non-traditional lens. The author provides historical detail and background from Hebrew and Greek translations to expand the reader's understanding of difficult concepts. Personally, I found the chapter about the role of women in marriage particularly fascinating. I really appreciated the author's research approach. A couple of times while reading, I had to put the book down and just think about the ideas presented. At no point in the book does Bird talk down to the reader. Instead, Bird is always affirming that it is ok if these topics are hard to reconcile. Bird's style is easy to read, a perfect mix of academic research and a conversational tone.

This book is appropriate to read as an individual and would also work as a small group study. Thought provoking questions are included with the chapters. Also, relevant scripture suggestions are made, but not included in the book. I suggest this book to a group that enjoys working through difficult topics and is comfortable with different points of view. Not everyone will be comfortable with the author's interpretation of particular texts. By the end of the book, I was curious to hear more about how the author worked through these issues on a personal level. Little is devoted to this, leaving the reader to ponder the book well after it is finished.

Wonderful and insightful. The book touches (and provides very satisfactory answers) on questions I've had about Christianity since I was a young Southern Baptist but was afraid to ask. Bird fervently invites the reader to investigate on their own terms---not to just take her word for it. Whether you agree with her or not, it's a great book to utilize when establishing intellectual religious dialogue with someone. Finally, it's very well-written and concise; even if you're not well-versed in religious studies, Bird's explanations allow you to easily keep up with the presented concepts.

A real conversation starter

Got this book because it was on the PCUSA website and I felt it would be an interesting book for a small group study/discussion. A group of five of us from my church are meeting once a week with the goal of covering one chapter a week. Thus far, the material in the book has caused so much
discussion that we are falling a little behind. I have recommended the book to several people and have even told them to do an exercise from the first chapter just to give them an idea of what it's like. Read Genesis Chapter 1, then Chapter 2. Make a chart of the order things were created in the first chapter. Then go back and find when those same things were said to be created in the second chapter. Interesting. At times we feel perhaps the author is kind of snarky with her remarks, but that's just a personal thing for some of us. I think this book is best read when you have an opportunity to discuss it as you are reading. If I wasn't doing it in this group, I know I'd be pulling people aside to get their take on most of the material in it.

Many comparisons are made between the chemistry of the lanthanides and actinides and that of the transition elements, which is generally much more familiar to undergraduate chemistry students. The book uses the chemistry of the f elements as a vehicle for the communication of several important chemical concepts that are not usually discussed in detail in undergraduate courses, for example the chemical consequences of relativity and the lanthanide and actinide contractions. Many important modern applications of f element chemistry, e.g. the use of actinides in nuclear power generation and of the lanthanides in magnetic resonance imaging and catalytic converters in motor vehicle exhausts, are also discussed in depth.

An excellent introduction to f-element chemistry

Scott and Kaltsoyannis have done a really fine job of preparing an entry-level textbook which deals with the chemistry of the lanthanide and actinide elements. It is written at a level suitable for advanced undergraduate and upward, and the authors are to be commended for their clear and concise explanations of some difficult concepts. This is a highly readable text that should be recommended to anyone wishing to obtain an overall picture of the physical and chemical trends within this often-neglected group of elements.

Written in the best of the modern tradition

Too many treatments of the lanthanides ends up with lists of data or a main focus on spin mulitiplisities and terms. I'm not sure how many there are that understands the last topic, and can apply it to anything. This book take a broader and more coherent view of the chemistry of the f-group. Many parts are eminent. And the only I could wish more of would a be some few extra sentences about the molecule orbitals in the actinide complexes, ...just to make it even smoother to read.
