The authors of The New Color Line return with another libertarian polemic, this time taking aim at a justice system that has lost sight of its most important goals. Paul Craig Roberts and Lawrence M. Stratton warn of a "police state that is creeping up on us from many directions." There's the war on drugs, which makes it possible for federal agents to investigate people simply for carrying large amounts of cash. There's the crusade against white-collar crime, which has turned the plea bargain into an enemy of the truth. And there's outright misconduct, abetted by prosecutors more interested in compiling long lists of indictments than ensuring the fair treatment of all suspects. The Tyranny of Good Intentions is replete with examples of how government treads on freedom through ill-willed prosecution and faceless bureaucracy. The book's overpowering sense of disaffection sometimes leads to alarmist prose: "We the People have vanished. Our place has been taken by wise men and anointed elites." The authors are swift to suggest that America, barring "an intellectual rebirth," may yet go the way of "German Nazis and Soviet communists."

Yet The Tyranny of Good Intentions is nothing if not well intended; it is full of passion and always on the attack, whether the writers are taking on racial quotas, wetland regulations, or any number of policies they find objectionable. In a jacket blurb, libertarian icon Milton Friedman calls it "a devastating indictment of our current system of justice." Roberts and Stratton, although right-leaning in many of their political sympathies, will probably find plenty of fans on ACLU-left--and anybody who cringes at the thought of unbridled state power. According to Roberts and Stratton (both fellows at the Institute for Political Economy), our cherished individual rights are going to hell in a handbasket, delivered by politically ambitious prosecutors, misguided or malevolent bureaucrats, law enforcement agents run amok and pandering politicians. This book has odd heroes/victims: Charles Keating of the Savings and Loan scandal, Exxon Corporation (owner of the Exxon Valdez), hotelier Leona Helmsley, Michael Milken and even agri-business giant Archer Daniels Midland. The arch-villain is odder still, Jeremy Bentham, the 19th-century philosopher who popularized the theory of utilitarianism, which can be simply described as a belief in formulating public policies that result in "the greatest good for the greatest number." Bentham's villainy, the authors say, is rooted in utilitarian philosophy's role in undermining the Rights of Englishmen traceable to the Magna Carta and the Glorious Revolution of 1688 and now embodied in the Bill of Rights. Perhaps oddest of all is the characterization of J. Edgar Hoover as a paragon of morality and law enforcement restraint, qualities the authors feel are utterly lacking in today's American leadership. Roberts and Stratton will strike a nerve with this book; the government abuses they colorfully rail at--the unrestrained powers of police and prosecutors, unfair forfeiture laws, unreasonable bureaucratic regulations and police profiling, to name a few--mark a frightening departure from what most Americans consider the fair exercise of government authority. Unfortunately, in the end, the book comes off as primarily an incendiary polemic. Lost in the rhetoric of the authors' call to arms is a useful analysis of how to balance competing individual and societal interests without sacrificing fundamental rights. (Apr.)

Roberts and Stratton say the Constitution and its basis in the historic rights of Englishmen to be secure in person and property are not merely imperiled but substantially gutted. In the twentieth century, many personal and property rights have succumbed to governmental regulations and to ambitious, unscrupulous government attorneys. The authors cite cases to show how it became possible to be guilty of a crime though lacking criminal intent; to be liable for damages that were, when committed, not damages; to forfeit assets without cause or assurance of recovery; to be coerced to plead guilty; to avoid punishment by snitching on others; and to force private attorneys to divulge confidential client information. For the sake of fighting the war on drugs, cleaning up pollution, and other initially well-meant causes, Roberts and Stratton warn, the U.S. is becoming the image of its totalitarian former enemies in its prosecution of justice--or, rather, injustice. Must-read for law students and law enforcement

This book should be a must-read for every first-year law student as well as for those in law enforcement at all levels. Roberts and Stratton make the case for how law enforcement and the courts trample the rights of citizens and endanger the public safety, not to mention destroying our founding document, the Constitution of the U.S. Be prepared to get angry at the unfairness dealt to ordinary, law-abiding citizens who cannot possibly know every nuance of every law passed by every community and state in the U.S., let alone the constantly changing federal law. This book will both outrage and inform the ordinary citizen.

Excellent overview of how the Constitution is being subverted by bureaucrats and legislators

The basic theme of this book is that the rule of law is being subverted by legislators who grant far too much authority to regulators who are beyond reach of the voter. The result is that the essence of Constitutional law is lost. One grievous example, which is not mentioned in the book, but serves as an illustration is Roe v. Wade. This Supreme Court decision removed a highly contentious argument from the people, acting through their various state legislators, and created judge made law. Judges who are not elected by the people.

"The Tyranny Of Good Intentions" sticks to lower ground. For example, the Housing and Urban Affairs Department attempted to suppress the First Amendment rights of people protesting the creation of a taxpayer-funded homeless shelter in their neighborhood. HUD didn't want any opposition - and sought to silence its critics. Another example is how Netscape Corporation, unable to succeed in the marketplace, was able to sic the law on its more able competitor, Microsoft Corporation. Thus the law was perverted to serve private desires under the flag of public interest.

The authors maintain that "[t]he Constitution has been lost in poor teaching and the legal profession's accomomodation to unaccountable power". Constitutional law, the authors say, has been trivialized - and they provide many examples to support their contention. They claim that the United States today is ruled by bureaucrats who make law under broadly delegated powers and by judges who legislate an tax from the bench. The original American Republic they say is lost - and if the people don't reclaim their power - worse is to come.

The book is essentially non-partisan and any American who reveres the Constitution and its promises should take notice.

Great Overview of Polytheism

As a Polytheist myself, I found it to be highly accurate to what I believe and do as part of my spiritual practice. The book itself describes research methods and overall findings based on a series of interviews with modern, Western Polytheists, then has sections where individuals describe their beliefs and practices in their own words. As such, there is some repetition as far as information presented, but this is a wonderful book for anyone trying to understand Western Polytheism and how it differs from Neo-Pagan religions such as Wicca. There is also some comparing and contrasting with the more prevalent monotheistic faiths, highlighting why some of the questions and concerns of those faiths aren't relevant within a Polytheist context.

Exploring Polytheism

I enjoyed this book and found it interesting and informative. I have learned a great deal about polytheism and the people who practice it. There is some repetition, but given the number of people who were interviewed, this is to be expected. I recommend this to anyone interested in learning about polytheism and it's place in the world.

This book seems in my estimation to give it's subjects a place to speak for themselves, and it can serve as a fertile platform for discussion about faith, belief, and polytheism--as is the framework. Walking with the subjects is itself a rare pleasure, and it is a credit to the author to have compiled so much testimony about modern polytheism, in such a way that novice readers can see the difference from the subjects' views and Paganism and Wicca. The mental health science might also take note.

In court, Church management designated the anti-Christ narrative as a fraud and a hoax to protect cash flow. There were other original Hubbard inspired beliefs rejected by the new cadre of Scientologists. The most important was that the genetic material of the human race had been degraded by beings outside of physical space and time with plans to control the universe. Scientology then devolved in two major directions. First, the established church disassociated itself from the upper level secrets of Hubbard's legacy and built a real estate empire of renovated, high-quality church facilities. These are intended as vehicles for expansion when public acceptance of the religion can be achieved. Second, a variety of splinter groups developed to continue the traditional forms of psychological therapy known as "auditing." Some of these groups practice a brand of belief which is even more extreme than the current church. Lucifer's Bridge covers the time period during 1988-1989 when Scientology morphed into its present form. Thus a simple definition of Scientology is almost impossible at present. In its basic form, Scientology created its own definition of a spirit. It also tried to expand the definition of electricity to the behavior of an immortal entity seeking self-willed incarnation. This has been construed by the majority as mere Goety. However, to understand its true nature and Hubbard's real intent, a review of the material in this book is essential. Hubbard's most intense secrets have no supporting scientific evidence and are thus classified as fiction. An examination of these provide the foundation for an analysis of his psyche and the source of the violence manifested in the current Church of Scientology. Hubbard was a science fiction author. He developed Scientology acting in the role of the mythological Lucifer. Hubbard's final personal battles in his mental cosmos reveal an inner fear of personal domination by space aliens walking among us on earth. Is Scientology then a religion? On the one hand, it is based on duplicity. A serious investigation of the basis of Scientology also reveals a paradox. Hubbard tried to unify eastern and western religious traditions into a synthesis of belief. He even implied that his aura extended to the Buddha of 2,600 years ago. Since Hubbard rejected the Sage's fundamental doctrine of "impermanence," this cannot be supported. On the other hand, Scientology outlines a personal salvation. This is based on a tiny but powerful flow of electrical current which Hubbard claimed to have discovered. Thus his teachings revolve around the release of massive amounts of energy trapped by lack of consciousness and distorted perception. Hubbard's solutions to mental and physical problems are thus unique. Eager to be enskied, followers of Hubbard are led to believe that social and political problems persisting into the 21st century can be solved by the application of his techniques. Helpful Deconstruction Tool for Former Members

Though I find the writing to be rather "quick, down and dirty" in simply stating the author's opinions/hypotheses/findings (about various things relating to Scientology, other religions and how they relate to Scientology) quite sparse in explanation, it's still okay with me. I appreciate the fast pace. I can verify his statements and conclusions myself.

The book is helping me a lot to untangle my involvement and mindset about it all. I'm not finished yet but so far, it's 5 stars for me. The author is coming at this from a different angle from all the other books on Scientology I have read so far. It's a page turner.

An Absolute Treat!

Little Ty was absolutely adorable and so darn funny! There must be a real-life Ty somewhere in Jeff Erno's life, because this little guy was so completely believable. His phrasing and the way he'd blurt things out, uncensored, was so realistic ("Sometimes I let them out of the cage, but Uncle Rex doesn't like it. He gets mad when they poop on the curtains."). I refuse to believe this little guy is merely a fictional character. That's how vividly he came to life for me. There were many laugh-out-loud moments for me throughout the book thanks to Ty.

But Ty was just one part of this soon-to-be family unit. The budding romance between Ty's adopted dad, Rex, and newcomer Josh was very sweet. Neither looking for love but unable to deny their instant chemistry and strong mutual attraction. Both of these characters were engaging and multi-dimensional. We get to see how certain events in their pasts have shaped their current paths in life, and we get to follow them on their journey to overcome the obstacles that threaten to prevent them from achieving their hopes and dreams.

Any child would be lucky to have parents as wonderful and loving as these two. :-)

A good fantasy gay novel

Who doesn't like a good fantasy every once in a while - beats real life most of the time. Nowadays gays get to go off into the sunset and live happily ever after - not like the old days when one of the pair had to die. Hell, everyone needs a good fantasy every once in a while.

this was a really great book and those that want to look at technical details probably should not be reading this... it is called gay romance and fiction... so those that want or have to be OCD should get over it...

the characters are great... story line very believable if you come from a small town... with bigotry and hate... Ty is just too cute in his lines and the main characters are great people...

kept me turning the kindle page even thru dinner.... lol... and it really is not a short book but could not put it down....

keep writing them... i loved it!!!

Five Stars Plus package In Aircraft Engine Design

This textbook and the accompanying software is a real time journey through the aircraft engine conceptual design process which is analogous to the design process within the industry. It is a unique reference after Dr. Oattes three well known reference books which are the industry standards. Though, J.Mattingly followed Dr. Oattes foot step in an innovative, modern and practical integrated manner.

From a generic stand, the package is a powerful tool for aircraft engine design, aircraft conceptual design/ initial sizing, aircraft performance and the principles of gas dynamics.

A very interesting chapter has been given for combustion simulation, valuable annexes in propeller design, materials, mixer design, aircraft engine controls ..... Etc. Design of supersonic and subsonic intakes and variable geometry CD nozzle is an added value. However, no provision was given for aircraft engine transient, emission and noise; which I wish to see in the next coming edition. The output of this software could be sending for further aircraft modeling analysis.

This package is a good reference for aerospace engineers, and researchers seeking to get quick answers to conceptual problems in aircraft and engine design, which makes this package unique for contents and cost.

Meanwhile, I would like to express to Dr. Mattingly, Dr. Heiser and Dr. Pratt the gratitude of many students and engineers; living and trying to learn thousands of miles away from United States; for providing them with this low cost package. Those young students and engineers without that technical support cannot complement aerospace learning before it is too late because of the money obstacle.
