In the grand storytelling tradition...

John Grisham is a storyteller. For all the flack he takes for being a "pop" author, this man knows how to tell a tale. The only thing this book was missing was a rocking chair and a porch. These are stories that might have been told on a lazy Sunday evening while sitting on grandpa's lap listening to the cicadas playing a tune composed by Mother Nature. These stories run the gambit from touching, to sinister, to the unthinkable, to heart-wrenching to, "yep that's what you get", to my favorite... the "illegal yes, but I'll bet it felt so good"!
Until Grisham's `Playing for Pizza', I avoided his non-lawyer novels. Well, I ended up enjoying that one and I really enjoyed this one. Like I said earlier, John is a mesmerizing storyteller and, although these stories are not related in any way, they flow like they are.

My favorite story, by FAR, was `Fish Files'. (Think of the movie `Falling Down' without the violence and caffeine). Maybe it's because I wish for this sort of thing to happen to me or maybe because I love living vicariously through a story. Whatever the reason, I really enjoyed reading about Mack because he didn't hesitate when opportunity kicked down his door. Be a good man... bah! Sticking with good southern values... whatever! Doing what your Sunday school teacher said... yeah ummm... I think I'll pass. I simply loved this story!!

`Casino' came a very, very close second. Each one of these seven stories creates a different feeling, gives birth to a unique memory, speaks to hidden emotions, and, in a small way, enriches the human spirit. His pop success made him famous, but it's his ability to grab and never let go that makes his books unforgettable. As a book lover/fanatic, I really enjoy authors' who have that ZING it takes to grab my attention and that indescribable POW that keeps me reading. This is a wonderful, classic, short story collection.

THE BLITZ REVIEW OF FORD COUNTY

America's greatest contribution to literary forms is the short story. Just refer to a strange looking gentleman named Poe. So why is it that so many prominent American writers today seem to have forgotten the short story?
John Grisham to the rescue! His recently published collection of short stories, "FORD COUNTY", is one of the best books of 2009.
The book is composed of seven beautifully written tales from Grisham's roots in Mississippi. Each story is a gem! The mostly contemporary plots range from hilarity ("Blood Drive") to heartache ("Michael's Room"). By the end of the last selection ("Funny Boy"), the reader wishes there were seven more.
This is a great writer at his best, and one hopes that in the future Mr. Grisham will bring us more tales from Ford County. Get the book and enjoy every word. "Ford County" is superb!

Not only a great collection of stories all set in Ford County, it is also a showcase of human follies, and in as few words as possible, I'll describe each one of them:

Blood Drive - a very point-blank demonstration of the saying "boys will be boys".

Fetching Raymond - it's true that your character will most likely take after your parents or the people who've raised you, but it's still up to oneself to set one's course in life.

Fish Files - this one, along with Casino, are the stories that had the villains got away with it. Nothing much in terms of life lessons there, so to the young people who read this, just remember karma.

Casino - see Fish Files

Michael's Room - taking revenge is better via an attack on the conscience. As well, maybe a little threat on the side, one that is not empty, would surely help.

Quiet Haven - a bit in the category of Fish Files and Casino, only this story has the scheming con being able to help in some way while he carries out his mission.

Funny Boy - shows how people, even those who preach to love one another, buckle down and pass on judgment like they were not sinners at all.

I've always been hooked on Grisham, and I think I will remain to be.

I liked the case studies better than the introduction and I ...

Developing Courses in English for Specific Purposes is a short book of 157 pages including the index. It is divided into two parts. Part one introduces EAP, as if most who buy this book really need it, Analysing Needs (the two most important words in this book), Investigating Specialist Discourse and Developing the Curriculum. Part continues with four case studies: English for the Police, English for Medical Doctors, Academic Literacies in Visual Communication, and English for Thesis Writing which precedes the conclusion. I would sum up this book as needs analysis, investigation, and implementation of the research often in a very short period of time. I found the case study, Academic Literacies in Visual Communication, to be the most interesting because it was different and fresh. I liked the case studies better than the introduction and I skipped reading the conclusion. The writing style was tedious to read after a while. The mantra in this book is Analysis, analysis, and more analysis before you narrow your investigation and then finally it is time to actually make the course. This book is okay, but its weakness, as well as its strength, is that it is really a series of four case studies.

Just go buy it

I originally purchased this book for a Poli Sci class and lost it sometime after the class. A few years later I desperately wanted to re-read certain portions ( turned out to be all of it ) and actually bought it again. While it's obviously a summarization of many political ideologies, the breadth of information is excellent.

One of the best social science books I've read

I first read the book in POLSC 201: Intro to Political Theory. I found the book to be well written and easy to understand. I kept the book after the course was over and have since referred back to this book for many other classes. I recommend this book to all Liberal Arts and Social Science majors.

Vagina monologues of Ali Wentworth

Ali Wentworth is a gorgeous woman, great comedienne and an excellent writer. This memoir is written in an entertaining prose rather than a traditional biography. In this collection of essays, she writes about relationships, friendships, inspiration, marriage, parenting, and wellness. She muses on the hard lessons learned in her career as a television performer, a wife and a mother in her 50 years of life! After all life experiences comes in fifty shades of grey.

Some of the interesting stories in this book are; when she was living in Los Angeles with her friend named Daphne, she experiences jealousy with her friend. She finds that her circle of friends were encased in sexual ambiguity and insecurity in life. In another episode, when she was on an erotic adventure with her boyfriend named Leo to Hawaii, he takes a book to read during the trip and her dream of a romantic weekend comes to an abrupt end when he leaves her in the hotel. While shooting for video project in her swanky apartment in New York, when a cameraman named Hugh stinks up her apartment with a bowel blast in the restroom; she comes up with several schemes to circumvent that problem but to no avail.

This book is full of witty zingers and some juicy stories. With twist of words and phrases, she narrates her life story in a highly entertaining style and keeps the reader engaged to the very last page. Despite all the rowdiness, Ali Wentworth’s erudition pokes fun of life. She sounds psychotic, but she is also a lady who is proud of intimate disclosures sharing with her readers.

I like watching Ali Wentworth whenever she is on tv. However, to my disappointment I found her book SO bloody boring! We are the same age, so I thought it would be a fun light read while on vacation. While she does have a cute sense of humor the stories were SO dull... and I felt like the Kendal Jenner story was contrived! I all honesty I couldn't finish the book... it wasn't even worth skimming! Sorry Alie... you are still adorable, but your book just isn't:(

I learned of Amos Niven Wilder in a discussion of this book, first published by Harper and Row as "The Language of the Gospel: Early Christian Rhetoric" from Bob and Kelly Wilhelm who operate Storyfest. Harvard U. Press has reversed the original title and subtitle, but Wilder's message is unchanged: each person can "tell the story" of (Christian) experience without memorizing verses from scripture. Story and storytelling remain essential to humanity's collective spiritual progress. Go quickly and tell.
