Great Resource!

This book has become one of my favorites. I liked it from the beginning but after having it in our clinic for a few months, it has really shown it's value. We have most of the top veterinary anesthesia books, which are also great, but this one stands out. It's easy to read, understand and it's not too dense; it just gives you the exact amount of information you need to apply it to your patient. Our clinic has a lot of technicians with a large range of anesthesia skill/comfort levels from basic to advanced and this book works for everyone. There's been countless times where we have a surprise surgery on a patient with comorbidities. Technicians who may have never dealt with these diseases before can whip this book out, do some quick reading and pick an anesthetic protocol that is safest for their patient.

Don't expect too much, but do look past the simplistic writing!

In her time, the author took bold steps in writing this very short piece. So, I entirely respect the author and *why* she wrote it - including her choice to call it a "dream" so as not to offend the mail-dominated society and era that she lived in. Made it see the light of day certainly.

The author was clearly a strong individual and wanted to write about the inequities faced by women, and to address them head-on. The story provides a dream sequence where Sultana is transported to another land where everything is turned on its head - women rule, men are subservient, etc.

Unfortunately, the story is not well-written. The writing is very simplistic and designed to hit you over the head rather than show any subtlety whatsoever. Do look past that, to the underlying reason the author had to write on this topic.

A Must Read for Mothers of Teenage Girls

This book is a must for mothers of teenage girls. It helps mothers to understand that being a teenage girl in today's world is different to her world. That teen girls face problems we did not. It helps us to understand how to talk with them about difficult topics such as boys, sex, pornography, the Internet, self-harm and a range of other issues. The book also tackles the issue of why teenage girls often do not openly discuss their problems and concerns with their mothers/parents. The author Susie Shellenberger is the founding editor of a magazine for teenage girls, a former teacher and a youth pastor and well placed to write about such issues. As a child/adolescent psychologist and a mother I recognise the value of this book and its contribution to parenting girls in this era.

Everywhere we look we see teenage girls with no self-esteem, too many eating disorders, and poor choices in friends. But are we taking time to look below the surface – time to talk to them long enough to determine the cause?
I know, I know…. She knows she can come to you, right? That’s not the questions though, is it? It’s whether she will come to you.
This book helps us not only to learn what’s really going on but also how to step back take a hard look at ourselves and our relationships with these girls that we love.

Hott Review:
This was a tremendously difficult book to read. It was very hard to step back and take a completely honest look at myself and the relationship I have with my daughter. It was also astonishingly difficult to see what’s really going on in their lives.
I can’t say enough – and this point is also made in the book – that the thing that teens need most is just someone to listen to them. Find a teen and give them that non-judgmental ear that they so desperately need!!

Sheikh Adham Aal Ferjani of Khumayrah & Sabrina Grant

This is the fourth novella story out of six in the Summer for Scandal Series set in the Hamptons in New York.

Sheikh Adham Aal Ferjani is the typical alpha supreme male. He is not as alpha as he will soon find out. Adham has struck a bargain with Sabrina Grant's father who is heavily in debt. He will pay his debts and in return Adham will marry the virginal Sabrina. Unbeknownst to Sabrina naively has fallen in love with Adham. He wants to make sure she is a virgin so he beds her before the wedding. Adham and Sabrina are very compatible in bed. Adham has one year to produce an heir and even though he doesn't love Sabrina he will make sure she lives up to the agreement that he had with her father. Unfortunately Sabrina's father dies shortly after the wedding takes place.

Sabrina is confused because she truly loves Adham and wants him to make love to her and let her be a part of his world. Adham has only carnal feelings for Sabrina. Sex is good with her and he needs an heir to appease his father and his duty to his country. He classifies her in his mind as nothing but a gold digger. His main focus is to win the polo match and bring good press to the polo matches. He plans to win. His sudden marriage is bringing too much negative publicity. But he plans to change that. His plans to make Sabrina suffer may be his undoing.

Sabrina finally figures out that to Adham she is nothing but a prize in her father and husband's agreement. She is devastated and leaves Adham. She finally realizes that she has just been a pawn in their game.

Adham almost realizes too late that his feelings for Sabrina are very real. He needs her as much as the air he breathes. It seems that he has finally realized a little too late that Sabrina is the real deal. But is it too late to convince her that he loves her?

In the Hamtons it is a Summer of Scandal for all.

This was the most explosive story so far in this series.
Once again Olivia Gates has not disappointed. All I can say is nobody does it better. My only complaint is that this novella would have been great as a complete novel.

This is a Five Star MUST read.

LOVED BOTH STORIES

When buying the book I figured I would only read Brenda Jackson stroy which was really good, I love stories with the theme of loving, losing someone only to find them again. Ms Jackson has a gift this was a quick read that I truly enjoyed. Mathew, and Carmen were funny, loving and had LOTS of misunderstanding. I started rooting for them from page one. The second story was also really good. I had never read any of Oliva books but it was well worth it. Adham was a mess, and Sabrina was no joke. Both stories had big misunderstanding but the story was told so good you didn't want to stop reading it. Read both stories, and you won't be sorry.

Scandal in the Hamptons

Book 1 in A Summer Scandal miniseries it's described "spend the season in the Hamptons, where the wealthy play hard and their passions run hot!"

Husband Material by author Brenda Jackson was a very sensual read about a second chance at happiness and love. A Hollywood Producer and Actress that were adored by the press and fans as they were to have shared a perfect marriage. However, Matthew Birmingham was a work alcoholic and he only wanted to provide the best for his wife; he wanted her to have everything. However Carmen his wife didn't care about that she only wanted her husband and when he didn't show up in Spain as promised and she lost her baby she was going to tell him about upon his arrival, that was it.....she filed for divorce.

Now a year later and part of her divorce settlement, she's staying at their Hampton estate and going to attend the polo matches and have a little R&R. What she doesn't count on is Matthew showing up and telling her he's determined to stay at the estate and they could share! Gossips, the press, everyone speculated about a reconciliation. However, they both were determined to seek revenge for each of them hurting each other and it was a very dangerous game, a very sensual game which literally sizzled off the pages.

Husband material was a very enjoyable read, emotional because of the emotional loss they both felt, the misconceptions, the hurt and in the end, the happy ending. It, along with the Sheikh's Bargained Bride set the stage for this series and I'm looking forward to reading about the other characters introduced at the polo matches.

The Sheikh's Bargained Bride by the fantastic author Olivia Gates was book with all sorts of surprises because one is immediately given the insight that he cherished and adored his wife, but that was only for the press. Let's just say I was shocked at the reason he married Sabrina Grant because it was obvious they had made love and that she adored her new husband. She was also confused why he stayed away from her until she found out her about the bargain he made with her father. A ridiculous one at that!

Again, set in the Hamptons and around the polo matches of course this rich sheikh would be involved as he was a top notch player and bred Arabians. He adored his animals but he mistrusted his wife because he believed she knew about the agreement he had with her father. However, he wanted her!

As a new bride Sabina Grant could not understand why her new husband had put a distance between them. They had been intimate when they were dating and she adored him and missed him fiercely. Why during the day in front of his friends and the press did he pay attention to her, touch her, act as if she was the most special woman in the world? Then nothing, no sharing a bedroom.....nothing!

Well it had to stop and then the most horrible thing happened she overheard a conversation one that explained that what he thought of her and why he married her and it broke her heart! However, in the end he lusted after her, he couldn't help himself and she saw "red" and left him. Well, I loved a dark man, a mysterious one and in the end this particular royal was brought to he knees, I promise. Again, Olivia Gates has written a sensual dance between two extremely charismatic characters in The Sheikh's Bargained Bride.

In Pragmatist Governance, Chris Ansell begins with a theory of the concept and then explains why the approach is ideal for addressing today's governance problems. For instance, while many think that bureaucracy's unchecked growth is the fundamental problem facing democracy today, pragmatism suggests the opposite: that public agencies can effectively manage the relationship between governance and democracy if they focus on building consent for public problem-solving. Ansell argues that wishing away bureaucracy will not do given what we know about the indispensible role of institutions in contemporary governance. Utilizing pragmatist concepts, Ansell rethinks the design of institutions, arguing that they are neither the simple products of rational design that can be endlessly tinkered with nor 'congealed taste'--where institutions represent the timeless customs and values of a people. Along with overcoming this dualism, Ansell also challenges us to rethink our approach to governance. Instead of moving from one extreme to the other--from bureaucracy to 'post-bureaucracy' or 'public entrepreneurialism'--pragmatism would not merely seek to replace one (hierarchical bureaucracy) with the other (a 'flat,' entrepreneurial organization), but rather to hitch the two approaches together in an innovative amalgam where organizational leaders constantly interact with and learn from street-level bureaucrats.

Pragmatist Governance concludes that if government is to regain public trust, the technical knowledge of experts must be brought together with sensitivity to local problems, situations, and knowledge. The answer lies not, however, in a diminished bureaucracy. That may only deepen distrust. Rather, the emphasis should be on taking the best of both sides to find innovative and effective ways to solve enduring public problems.

He argues that inherited Weberian notions of hierarchical governance of coordination through promulgation of rules, "New Public Management's" notions of results-oriented and performance-measured coordination through market incentives, and liberal and neoliberal notions of democracy which have tended to wash back and forth between mechanisms for coordination by rules, and/or by incentives (emphasized differently according to one's antecedent ideological viewpoint), all hold in common the fallacy of "dualism" in world view. He points out this analytic shortcoming is expressly addressed by the founders of pragmatism and arguably is compounded in each case, perhaps not accidentally, by overemphasis upon a preferred "mechanism" as imagined solution to public problems. Indeed, it is not hard today to find either-or arguments as to an appropriate "mechanism" of public policy, arguments which typically currently talk past one another rather than seek problem-solving approaches concretely to "objective possibilities" (as articulated by A.G. Ramos circa 1970) for situations at hand. One's notion of power, accountability, and responsibility is integral to this dilemma and explored with some direct attention in this book.

Chris Ansell presents his argument for forward-moving thinking in contemporary thought and presents his timely and thought-provoking view that pragmatism as classically understood, addresses the fallacy of "dualism," (either-or or reductive thought simply said) which tacitly (in Michael Polanyi's sense) has remained too prominent in public affairs and still underpins much of dominant thought in politics, public policy, and its administration.

Ansell's text is unique in offering a pragmatist interpretation of his late senior colleague at Cal, Philip Selznick's unique contribution to both law and organizational analysis. Ansell's analysis of Selznick's contribution is offered as a countervailing frame of reference to that of Max Weber. Selznick's lifelong analysis disputes not Weber's notion of hierarchy as an endemic character of the modern world, broadly understood, but rather disputes Weber's "iron cage" as an objective necessity. Selznick's institutional interpretation is more open-ended to "objective possibilities" and is more fluid then the "dualistic" approach to organizational analysis which Ansell argues with some persuasion characterized Weber's approach (and arguably that of his students such as Robert Michels) at the level of tacit assumptions informing their organizational analysis. Ansell is also unique in demonstrating with some care connection between Selznick's thought and that of Mary Parker Follett (who was a deep student of senior founders of pragmatism), a connection which significantly enriches the thought of each.

Despite the practical relevance of his volume, the danger of the subtitle is that it may put off active consideration of his material by some professional programs of public policy and administration. That is, it is true that Ansell explores the notion of "evolutionary learning" in depth and that he underscores the practical bearing of ways of thinking about democracy, governance, and institutions at macro, mediating, and micro levels of analysis. It's also true that "public philosophy" is a fair way of stating the bearing of ideas on action, most visibly at the macro level. The risk is that attention to diverse ways of seeing are seldom addressed deeply or explicitly in programs formally organized to address professional challenges in public policy and administration. Nevertheless, for insightful instructors and for readers reflectively conscious of the bearing of ideas upon action, this thought-provoking book is warmly recommended.
