About the Author
Franz Alexander was director of the Department of Psychiatry at Mt. Sinai Hospital, Los Angeles, and professor of psychiatry at the University of Southern California. Himself a pioneer in psychoanalysis, his works include "The Western Mind in Transition; The Scope of Psychoanalysis, 1921-1961; Fundamentals of Psychoanalysis; Psychosomatic Medicine; "and "The History of Psychiatry."

Easy read, well written.

A seminal work - a must read for a dynamically oriented therapist who values knowing the origin and development of their orientation. There is a reason this book is so regularly cited, it was far beyond its time and implies many ideas that are just starting to be researched or written about in the past couple decades. This highlights the turning point from proper Freudian analysis to the blooming of the diverse contemporary dynamic theories.
