A beautiful story with a spiritual sense to it, Charles Dickens would be proud

Scrooge and Marley by Karl F Hollenbach is definitely a must read if you liked A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. I personally loved the spirituality throughout the book. There was a quote towards the end that stood out to me, it reads, " We go round and round, each time missing the golden ring; and then when we are older, when we can reach it, we don't care."

I think that particular quote sums up the whole book. Marley was determined to right his wrongs and Scrooge was learning that it is not about what you do but how you do it. At times, our intentions are good but things don't always turn out that way. I actually loved Scrooge being a cheerful giver and just overall being happy throughout the book. It shows that people can and do change.

It is true that we often miss the mark but it is important to know that we don't always have to miss it. Some people do give up as they get older but one should never give of. This book truly gave me a sense of the spiritual world and also made me think more about how my actions affect others, sometimes the effect of our actions are long-term. I am giving this book 5 stars, as I stated previously if you like books by Charles Dickens, you will like this one. You will not be disappointed.

What a sequel!

To put myself into the Christmas Spirit.. I got this book. OMG! It delivered in a major way! Scrooge, indeed DID turn his life around.. and allowed the love of mankind to swarm his soul in every way possible. He did not dwell on who he had been.. but, instead.. chose to insert himself very much into the land of the "living". To truly better his own life.. and the lives of those.. who crossed his path. Always striving to do more for others. Without recognition.

I love how Marley shows up once again on the following Christmas Eve! He asks Scrooge to help him make amends for some of the wrongs that Marley had made over the course of his life. Only this time.. the tasks last much longer than one evening. Scrooge is happy to help his old friend find peace in the afterlife.

The story takes you over the course of many years.. and you learn what happens with the lives of all of the old favorite Dicken's characters. If you loved Dicken's story.. then this one.. will leave you.. with an even broader sense of the ripple effect that just ONE life.. has on so many others. A fantastic merry tale! God bless us everyone!

A Christmas Carol continues ...

Scrooge and Marley by Karl F Hollenbach is a very impressive piece of fanfic. The author picks up where Dickens left off at the end of A Christmas Carol. Hollenbach describes in the preface that he has loved this book for seventy years.

We all know Dickens' famous story, but the author recaps it quickly for us in the preface. So in chapter one, we see the new Scrooge at work and play, and a thoroughly nice man he is now. We fast forward to Christmas Eve, exactly a year after Scrooge's transformation. And Marley is back. He has saved Scrooge, but now it's his turn to be freed from his eternal torment. If Scrooge can perform certain tasks, then Marley's chains will be removed, bit by bit. These tasks are all quite big and so it takes longer than one night for Scrooge to achieve them all, but he's determined to do what he can for his friend so that he can find peace. They are all relatively straightforward so well within the capabilities of an elderly man with plenty of money to help him along. Thus it is we find Scrooge tracking down the certain people and righting old wrongs in order to redeem his wicked, greedy ex-partner. Does Marley deserve it? Probably not, but Christmas is a time of forgiveness, and the concept of redemption and second chance is clearly one that is important to the author. And it makes for a very good story! There is also an interesting twist at the end.

Hollenbach successfully adopts a Dickensian style of writing for this novel, but luckily avoiding any of the over-long, rambling Victorian sentences. Those were a feature of their time that contemporary readers took in their stride, but we go for more direct communciation these days. The author marries modern and nineteenth-century prose techniques to get the best of both worlds.

The ultimate way to judge a work of fanfic is by considering if the original author would have approved of what has been done with their ideas. Would Dickens have liked this book? He wouldn't have written it, since Hollenbach has a very original take, introducing the idea of reincarnation for example, but I'm as sure as I can be that Dickens would have enjoyed Scrooge and Marley very much indeed.

This is an entertaining Christmas read for anyone who enjoys A Christmas Carol.

About the Author
Franz Alexander was director of the Department of Psychiatry at Mt. Sinai Hospital, Los Angeles, and professor of psychiatry at the University of Southern California. Easy read, well written.

A seminal work - a must read for a dynamically oriented therapist who values knowing the origin and development of their orientation. There is a reason this book is so regularly cited, it was far beyond its time and implies many ideas that are just starting to be researched or written about in the past couple decades. This highlights the turning point from proper Freudian analysis to the blooming of the diverse contemporary dynamic theories.

Wow.

For professional gamblers, this book is the best you'll ever get.

Grosjean presents a wide variety of material. This text assumes the reader is a successful gambler, and has mastered all beginner and intermediate material. If you are a blackjack card-counter and have made 50k from BJ, you have the background to fully appreciate this book.

This presents material from two different angles, each of which is original. He first analyzes traditional games (not just Blackjack) and shows you ways to beat them, with a mathematical focus on exploiting weak dealers (there is an exceptional analyzis of 3-card poker). Second, he presents a new way of thinking for "textbook gamblers" (those who profit from books, but don't develop original ideas for themselves.) This focus opened my eyes to new ways to profit, notably in Blackjack. One other thing that is surprising for a book of this price - the methods explained are legal.

Some auction sites will list this book from $500-$2000. If 1. you don't know people "in the know", 2. you have at least 50k in capital, and 3. you play a lot of +EV BJ, this book is worth the auction price.

Before you buy a used copy, be aware that Grosjean is releasing a new edition of "Beyond Counting" in 2006 or early 2007. Grosjean's website notes that there might be two versions - the normal one, and one for accredited professionals. Given what I read in the original edition, it would not surprise me if he removed a lot of exceptional material for the republication.

Fantastic book - extremely useful and lucid

This is an amazingly lucid and very useful book. It provides valuable advice to get an edge in many casino games - all legal advice, of course. Essential, but, sadly, hard to get.

Regarding the sequel: It is already about a year late, and the publishers stopped posting publishing date updates on their website in February 2007.

Well worth it!

This book has some good infor on hole carding and next carding. Ken Uston's book "Million Dollar Blackjack" would be a companion for the hole carding part. Also an oportunistic craps play and a few other things. If you know info of unseen cards in CSP, TCP, LIR, then significant edges can be found as well as with the royal match side bet. I suspect the big six info has value, but you have to find the right opportunity (2 valuable ways listed here.

About the Author

Rosamund Davies has a background in professional practice in the film and television industries, in which she worked with both independent production companies and public funding bodies. As script editor and story consultant for Film London, she oversaw the development of around 100 projects.

Rosamund has been a lecturer in creative and media writing at the University of Greenwich since 2001, founding and expanding the university's screenwriting provision. She also developed the Working in the Media and Creative Industries course, which became the basis for the book Introducing the Creative Industries: From Theory to Practice (SAGE, 2012), which she co-authored with colleague Gauti Sigthorsson.

Rosamund is a member of the International Screenwriting Research Group and sits on the Programme Committee of the Adaptive Hypertext and Narrative Connections track for ACM Hypertext. Her publications include articles and book chapters on screenwriting, hypertext and online video. Her article Narrating the Archive and Archiving Narrative: the Logic of the Index in International Journal of the Book, 5 (2008), was awarded the International Award for Excellence for the top ranked article in 2008. As an original member of the International Screenwriting Research Group, she has been active in the development of this new area of research and her article Screenwriting Strategies in Marguerite Duras's script for Hiroshima, Mon Amour (1960), was selected for inclusion in the first volume of the Journal of Screenwriting (2010) and identified as an example of innovation in screenwriting research (Koivumäki, M.R, 2011).

In her recent media practice, Rosamund has explored the intersection between narrative and archive as cultural forms and transmedia storytelling approaches to dramatic narrative. As co-investigator on the interdisciplinary research project PATINA (Personal Architectonics Through Interaction with Artefacts), funded by the RCUK Digital Economy programme, Rosamund has brought narrative enquiry to the context of designing effective research spaces, collaborating with colleagues in computer science, human computer interaction, archeology and architecture at the universities of Southampton, Bristol, Brighton, Newcastle and Swansea. She is currently collaborating on further interdisciplinary research projects with colleagues from computer science and archeology at the University of Southampton and Kings College London.

Dr Gauti Sigthorsson is Principal Lecturer in Architecture and Programme Leader  for the BA and MA in Media & Communication at the University of Greenwich.

GREGORY BASSHAM is chair of the Philosophy Department and a professor of philosophy at King's College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. WILLIAM IRWIN is a professor of philosophy at King's College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Amusing & Engaging - I'd Give it 6 Stars, if I Could!

Fun and excellent book. If I were a professor of philosophy (rather than my field), I'd teach a Harry Potter & Philosophy course using this as the main textbook. It's fun and interesting. I got the book on tape as well, and I have a blast listening to the analysis and connections using the Harry Potter universe with fun philosophic ideas (some of which I'm familiar with, and some not-so-much). Each chapter references the Harry Potter universe in great detail. Perfect for fans who want to dive into the philosophy Rowling used as well as fans who want to use this as a jumping off point to enter philosophy...or just think about concepts in a new, fun way, as I do.

Very pleasant introduction to classic philosophy and Potter refresher

Well this is embarrassing! While only two-thirds of the way through reading this very enjoyable introductory-level text on the classic philosophies incorporated into each of the Harry Potter novels, I accidentally left the book behind as I got off my commuter train last night. I checked at the train station this evening, and the book has not been turned in, from which I conclude someone else agrees this looks like a worthwhile book to read. I've also heard the same from a teen to whom I mentioned the book.

I've now just put my money where my mouth is, and ordered another copy for my Kindle 3G. Thus, we have assurance I consider the Ultimate Harry Potter and Philosophy worth its asking price.

For me, the book is useful in three ways: 1) as a pleasant refresher on the basic issues of Philosophy, and how those were dealt with by several of the best classic philosophers; 2) as a pleasant refresher on the important ideas, values and events of the entire Harry Potter series; and 3) as a bridge between generations, connecting popular culture with the enduring values of Western Civilization.

One surprising aspect of the book is that it mentions libertarian ideas fairly often, which I'd not noticed when reading the Potter books originally. Thankfully, it also is supportive of the idea of absolute truths, rather than insisting as some modern philosophers do that everything is relative.

As a team effort, some chapters are better than others, but all thus far are well worth reading.

I was expecting something a tiny bit longer I suppose, so I was a little shocked how tiny this little book is. Still, is it rich with illustrations and I think it was worth the money. It does serve as a good introduction to the subject.

The Flat Earth IS REAL

OK I LOVE Stars are souls and he is an amazing teacher! I have ordered this book.
It has not arrived yet but I am anxiously awaiting for it. The truth of the Flat Earth
IS REAL I myself have been on the beach in Seaside Oregon I have pictures from then and I seen it as flat.
I accept that the earth is flat due to all the evidence I have seen with my eyes. Thanks Mike for being a great teacher
